I was a teacher at a community college, but, though fun, work was toxic (not to mention the commute), and it took away most of my time from my kids.
Then, a friend reached out to me and offered me an online job. I did well in this job, so I left my teaching job. I started working from home full time.
I realized that for a mom like me, work-from-home would be the best choice. Here’s why.

Control of time
Many home-based jobs allow you to work flexible hours, so you get to do more things. You can fix your schedule according to the other things that you need to be done: help kids prepare for school in the morning; work once they’re in school; take care of them once they get back home. Such control of time makes it easy to manage all other things at home.
Spend time with kids
Since you will be home ALWAYS, you get to spend much time with your kids. You can monitor their needs and guide them with their homework. Best of all, you can play with them.
Since I started working from home, my kids and I have become much closer. We go out on weekends because I no longer had paper works like when I was teaching. We also have so much time to play board games.
Stay healthy
When you work from home, you can adjust your schedule according to your body’s condition.
I have AIHA (Auto-Immune Hemolytic Anemia), making it difficult for me to work away from home. I have to be able to rest frequently, and working from home allows me to do this.
Besides, when working from home, you don’t risk catching any virus or bacteria while on commute. You can also eat healthy because you don’t need to resort to fast food since you have time to cook healthy meals.
Also, you get to exercise regularly. My friend talks to her clients while on a treadmill!
Accomplish house chores
When you work in an office, you are often too tired to cook, do the dishes, clean the house, and do the laundry when you get home. Some would schedule laundry and house cleaning on weekends, so they hardly hang out with their kids.
When working from home, you can do these tasks on weekdays and free up your weekends to have fun. Weekends would be hangout days for my kids and me. We watch movies or play.
Working from home makes house chores easy to accomplish since you’re not too tired from work and travel. It also saves you cost from hiring a helper.
Potential to earn more
Many people who work from home have different jobs. I have met some virtual assistants who work for 2 to 3 bosses. Imagine how much financial freedom that means. Your husband would be so happy with the added income, and if you’re a single mom, well, that secures you and your kids.
Then there is the potential for more savings. Since you don’t commute, eat out, nor buy clothes for work, you save more money for emergencies or vacations.
Escape the hustle and bustle
I love working from home because I don’t need to commute, and I get to stay away from heavy traffic. Also, when the weather is bad, I am not affected at all.
Best of all, I am free of distractions from chatty office-mates.
Of course, some people love to socialize and don’t like working alone; let’s admit it, though, you accomplish more when there is no one disturbing you.
Working from home makes you work efficiently while not tiring yourself so much.
Now, you may be wondering what jobs you can do from home. Well, there are tons of work-from-home ideas that you can explore. You can teach ESL, which is perhaps the most popular home-based gig at the moment. You can be a virtual assistant, a graphic artist, a web designer, a home-based customer care assistant, a writer.
I even have a friend who is a voice actor: he records his voice per script requirement and sends it to the client via email or Dropbox.
I also saw on YouTube that you could make money by reviewing songs from Spotify. Now, that is fun work!
There are also online sellers; you make products and have them picked up and delivered to customers.
There’s just so many things you can do when you choose to work from home. You have to be open to the idea and go for it.
Again, imagine the time with your kids and the savings you can make!
