K-dramas, a world where stories of love, ambition, friendship, and fantasy intertwine; They aren’t just shows; for many, they’re an escape, a peek into a different culture, and a whirl of emotions.
As for me, no statistical data on how many people are addicted to these shows can encapsulate the depth of my attachment to this world. But let’s be honest, diving deep into these statistics would only remind me of just how much of my life is dominated by these series (and who wants to face that truth head-on?).
My gateway to this enthralling universe was a seemingly ordinary drama called “Attic Cat”. On the surface, it had a predictable storyline: a privileged law student accustomed to the luxuries of life crosses paths with a fellow student, leading them to share a quaint attic house. But it wasn’t just the storyline that drew me in. Maybe it was the fresh portrayal of the characters, maybe it was the novelty of the drama for me at that time, or maybe, just maybe, it was the allure of the word ‘cat’ in the title that piqued my curiosity. Whatever it was, it set me on a journey. Soon, my watchlist grew to include gems like “Full House” and underrated dramas like “Witch Yoo Hee” and many more.
The world of K-dramas had me ensnared, and there was no looking back.

The K-drama craze: A personal journey
Before K-dramas ensnared me, I was head over heels for Chinese dramas. I mean, who could resist the charm of Joe Chen? With features reminiscent of my sister, her beauty always caught my eye, especially in dramas like “Frog Prince” and “Fated to Love You.” Though, admittedly, the Korean version of the latter didn’t spark the same joy, despite the magnetic pull of Choi Jin-hyuk.
It was around this time, in the midst of my Chinese drama spree, that “Attic Cat” mysteriously appeared in my path—courtesy of a now-forgotten mobile app around 2004. A seemingly innocuous encounter that would pivot my viewing trajectory.
And then there was “Full House.” A series that held an amusing personal connection. The leading lady, dazzlingly beautiful Song Hye-Kyo, not only shared my name (well, almost), but resonated in a quirky way. Let’s be real—while she’s unbelievably pretty, I’d like to think I hold my own with a more ‘believable’ charm! 😂
Fast forward to today, and a peek into my MyDramalist profile reveals a staggering 483 dramas logged. And let me tell you, that’s not even an exhaustive tally.

Out of this formidable list, several dramas have left an indelible mark:
- Attic Cat: It all began here.
- Full House: My namesake series
- Witch Yoo Hee: A spellbinding tale
- Heal Me, Kill Me: The depth of human psyche
- Reply 1988: A nostalgic walk down memory lane
- Gap Dong: Thrilling to the core
- Birth of Beauty: A transformative journey
- Oh My Ghostess & Bring it on Ghost: The spectral duo
- Bride of the Century: A heartwrenching narrative
- Chicago Typewriter: Crafting stories across time
- Strong Woman Do Bong Soo: Empowerment personified
- The Guardians: Guardians of justice
- Splash Splash Love: Love across eras
- It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: I can relate.
- Queen of the Ring: Embracing uniqueness
- Emergency Couple: Love in unexpected places
Revisiting these dramas is akin to meeting old friends. While sharing every significant drama would require a list that goes on for miles, these are the gems I often find myself returning to, lost in their captivating tales.
The 10-point K-drama addiction scale
Every K-drama viewer has their own relationship with the genre, but just how deep does the obsession go? From the casual viewer to the die-hard fan, let’s decipher the stages of addiction. Buckle up, because it’s quite a journey!
1-2 Points: Casual Viewer
Dipping a toe into the world of K-dramas, you’ve probably seen an episode of “Boys Over Flowers” or “Crash Landing on You” because everyone talks about them.
Personal Note: For me, this phase was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment. No casual viewing here. I dug right in with “Attic Cat” and didn’t look back.
3-4 Points: Regular Watcher
You have your weekly drama schedule in place. A few episodes every week have become part of the routine.
Personal Note: This was me, rushing home just to dive into the world of “Witch Yoo Hee.”
5-6 Points: Devoted Fan
Now, you’re not just watching dramas; you’re living them. Joining fan communities, discussing plots, maybe even buying that cute merchandise.
Personal Note: My stint in Dramacool’s forums marked this phase. Yet, the allure of interacting waned as the desire to immerse myself in dramas grew.
7-8 Points: K-Drama Enthusiast
This is where you don’t just watch, you advise. Sharing your expertise with those venturing into K-dramas, guiding them through the best of the best.
Personal Note: Truly my stage. From Canada to Australia, family members from across the globe reached out for recommendations. The title of “K-drama Consultant” was a badge I wore proudly, even if actor names occasionally eluded me.
9 Points: Binge-Watcher Extraordinaire
The outside world? What’s that? Weekends become drama marathons, and sleep is a mere suggestion.
Personal Note: Oh, the days when a complete drama series was devoured in a single weekend! It became so intense that I had to strategically switch to ongoing series. The wait for new episodes? Agonizing, yet necessary.
10 Points: Ultimate K-Drama Aficionado
You’re not just watching dramas; you’re living in them. Every moment is influenced by K-drama, down to travel plans and daily ambiance.
Personal Note: While Jeju Island beckons for its sashimi (and maybe a hint of drama nostalgia), my daily reality is a K-drama backdrop. Where others have background music, I have the sounds of my favorite dramas playing (so does that count as me “living and breathing Kdramas? Nah).
On this scale, I’ve experienced nearly every stage, and what a roller coaster it has been! For fellow fans on this journey, where do you find yourself?

Where I land on the scale
Having traversed the vast universe of K-dramas, I can firmly place my flag in the 7-8 point range. Let me walk you through this assessment.
Viewing Habits and Content Engagement
The days of relentless binge-watching are behind me. Life, with its myriad responsibilities, has shaped my watching habits. Gone are the stretches where time blurred and one episode merged into the next. Now, I carefully pick ongoing dramas. The strategy is simple: ration the content, preserve sanity, and maintain a semblance of a normal sleep schedule.
Background Companions
While I might not be watching K-dramas incessantly, they still form an omnipresent background in my life. My favorite dramas, with their familiar plots and characters, play in the background as I work or take breaks. Their presence is comforting, a sort of ambient noise that reassures and brings snippets of joy.
K-Drama Conversations
Bring up K-dramas in a conversation, and you’ll find me more animated than ever. I’m the equivalent of a human K-drama encyclopedia, eager to share, recommend, and reminisce. To the unsuspecting individual who shows a mere flicker of interest, I can talk for hours about the depth, the character arcs, the OSTs, the cultural nuances—essentially everything.
Healing Through Dramas
While I’ve dialed back my K-drama consumption, that doesn’t mean my love for them has waned. Instead, I’ve found a balance that allows me to enjoy them while attending to life’s duties. They’ve been a healing force in my life, especially during challenging times. So, while I might not be the all-consuming addict of yesteryear, I remain an ardent enthusiast, cherishing every episode, every character, and every storyline.
Dare to join the K-drama world?
You haven’t tried watching a K-drama? Try it!
I would not say that once you pop it, you can’t stop. Perhaps it’s just the depression in me that gets me easily addicted to things. Still, you’ve been warned—it can be addicting.
To all my fellow K-drama fans, here’s to the wonderful world that offers solace, entertainment, and life lessons in the most unexpected ways! 🥂
