“Behind Your Touch”: A K-drama that’s more than just a love story

When considering the vast canon of Korean dramas, “Behind Your Touch” stands out as a welcome deviation from the typical love story. The drama introduces us to Bong Ye-bun, a veterinarian with the uncanny ability to peer into animals’ pasts through touch. While the show has its comedic flair and a unique twist on the rom-com genre, my feelings toward it are decidedly mixed.

In this reflection, which is a part of my ongoing series on K-dramas and other series, I’ll delve into its unconventional approach to romance, the intriguing partnership between a detective and a psychometric, and the surprising depth of its side characters.

A Unique Take on Romance

Romance frequently plays a central role in K-dramas, engulfing viewers in a whirlwind of love, heartbreak, and grand gestures. This is not the case with “Behind Your Touch,” which instead focuses on the investigation of a string of murders in a small town. This change in emphasis is refreshing in comparison to other romcoms like the recently concluded My Lovely Liar (another good watch), in which the romantic subplot remains central to the story even though there are mysteries to be solved.

What makes this drama particularly captivating for me is its ability to maintain romantic elements (not from the leads, though) without letting them overshadow the central mystery. The creators cleverly distribute romantic moments among the supporting characters, adding layers of emotional depth without diluting the main plot. Take, for instance, the pairing of Jung Hyun Ok, Ye Bun’s aunt, and Won Jong Muk, the Chief of Mujin Police Station. Their relationship is a delightful anomaly—a middle-aged romance that’s neither cringeworthy nor overly sentimental. Instead, it’s genuinely fun, especially when they recreate scenes from another beloved drama, “Twenty One, Twenty Five.”

Then there’s the quirky relationship between Bae Ok Hee, Ye Bun’s friend, and Kim Yong-Myeong. Their endearing, if somewhat nauseating, “cute talk” adds a layer of humor that keeps the romantic subplot engaging without becoming a distraction. This balanced approach to storytelling—where romance complements rather than competes with the central mystery—is what makes “Behind Your Touch” a standout drama for me.

The Detective and the Psychometric

In “Behind Your Touch,” the partnership between Moon Jang Yeol, a detective eager to make his mark, and Bong Ye Bun, a veterinarian with psychometric abilities, is far from straightforward. At first glance, their alliance seems like a match made in investigative heaven. Moon, desperate to solve a high-profile case to secure his transfer back to Seoul, discovers Ye Bun’s unique abilities and sees them as the golden ticket to accelerate his career.

However, this alliance raises ethical and professional questions. Moon’s reliance on Ye Bun’s psychic abilities could be seen as a shortcut, a way to sidestep the rigorous, methodical process that defines good detective work. It’s as if Moon is willing to compromise the integrity of his profession for the sake of expediency. This becomes even more complicated when it’s revealed that their suspect also possesses psychometric powers, making Ye Bun’s abilities not just an asset but a necessity.

Over time, the dynamic between Moon and Ye Bun evolves. What started as a utilitarian relationship—Moon using Ye Bun for her abilities—morphs into something more nuanced. Moon begins to realize that Ye Bun’s value transcends her psychic powers; she becomes a confidante, a partner in the truest sense. This shift underscores the complexity of their relationship and the ethical gray areas that come with blending traditional detective work with supernatural abilities.

The Double-Edged Sword of Superpowers

“Behind Your Touch” offers a nuanced exploration of the ethical implications of superpowers, particularly psychometry. The drama features three characters with this unique ability: Ye Bun, Jeon Kwang Shik, and the suspect (I will not name the person, of course). Each uses their powers in vastly different ways, adding layers of complexity to the narrative.

Ye Bun initially employs her psychometric abilities to communicate with animals in her veterinary practice. However, accidental glimpses into human memories lead her down a path of crime-fighting alongside Detective Moon Jang Yeol. Her powers serve as a force for good, albeit one that occasionally invades personal privacy.

Jeon Kwang Shik, on the other hand, uses his abilities more frivolously. He uses his psychometric abilities to read people’s thoughts out of curiosity, even using it as a dubious way to flirt with women. While this may raise ethical concerns about consent and privacy, Kwang Shik eventually channels his abilities for the greater good by assisting Ye Bun and Detective Moon.

Then there’s the suspect, whose identity I will keep a mystery. Unlike Ye Bun and Kwang Shik, who require physical touch to access memories, the suspect only needs eye contact. This heightened ability corrupts him, leading him to use his powers for malevolent purposes, specifically to exact revenge on those who have wronged him.

The varying uses of psychometric abilities in the drama highlight the ethical gray areas surrounding superpowers. While they can be used for noble causes like solving crimes or healing animals, they also have the potential for misuse, invasion of privacy, and even malevolence. This duality adds a compelling layer of complexity to “Behind Your Touch,” making it a thought-provoking watch.

The Power of Side Characters

In “Behind Your Touch,” the side characters aren’t just fillers; they’re the backbone that adds depth and entertainment to the drama. While the main plot is engrossing, it’s the side characters that often captivate my attention and keep me coming back for more.

Take Ok Hee, for example. Her commanding presence is always felt, and her strong personality makes her stand out. She’s the kind of character who could easily be a formidable villain, given her influence over others. Thankfully, she’s on the side of the good guys, serving as a moral compass that subtly guides the narrative.

Kim Yong Myeong may not appear in many episodes, but he’s left a lasting impression on me. His persistence, dependability, and adorable way of calling Ok Hee “unni” add a layer of warmth and humor to the drama. Then there’s Kim Sun Woo, who, while visually appealing, doesn’t contribute much to the storyline. He seems more like a placeholder, included to maintain the traditional K-drama structure.

The real show-stealers for me are Won Jong Muk and Jung Hyun Ok. Their recreation of scenes from “Twenty One, Twenty Five” is the hook that kept me coming back. They serve as the drama’s entertainment anchor, and without them, I honestly would have dropped the show.

Jeon Kwang Shik initially comes off as suspicious but eventually proves to be a good guy. However, his role in the story puzzles me. Why do we need a second psychometric? Is it to hint at a third? Park Jong Bae, the Shaman, and Cha Ju Man, the Assemblyman, add elements of mystery and intrigue but also make me question their necessity in the narrative.

Wrapping Up: A Drama That Keeps You Guessing

As I sit here reflecting on “Behind Your Touch,” I find myself grappling with its complexities and unanswered questions. The drama intertwines multiple storylines—serial killings, past redevelopment projects, and more—that seem correlated but not causative. While this leaves me pondering the true essence of the story, it also highlights the drama’s unique appeal.

Honestly, often, we don’t watch a show for its logical coherence; we watch it for the sheer entertainment it provides. And in that regard, “Behind Your Touch” delivers. It’s a drama that keeps you guessing, questioning, and, most importantly, entertained.
